Big Wind Agreement
Hawai'i Clean Energy Initiative

Projects

Four major projects make up the Interisland Wind project.

Environmental Impact Statements are required and will be done for all four aspects of the project. The project also requires approval by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission along with permits from other government agencies.

First Wind Hawai'i and Castle & Cooke are proposing to build wind farms on Moloka'i and Lana'i, respectively. Both have agreed to initially build wind farms of 200 megawatts.

The State of Hawaii is taking the lead in developing the inter-island marine cable. This includes procuring consultants to design and build it, obtaining financing and all necessary studies and permit approvals.

Hawaiian Electric is evaluating potential cable landing sites, facility sites and transmission routes. Every effort is being made to minimize the need for additional on-land facilities and transmission lines.
